Description

The Statue of Sherlock Holmes London in England, is a statue of Conan Doyle’s detective. It was unveiled on September 23, 1999, becoming the second statue of the fictional character in London after Peter Pan’s statue in Kensington Park. The statue stands nine feet tall and is complete with symbols such as a deerstalker hat, cloak, and pipe. It is located right next to Baker Street Station on the London Underground and near 221b Baker Street, where Holmes lived in the novel.

In 1927, novelist G.K. Chesterton, author of Father Brown, proposed a statue of Holmes in Baker Street, but it never came to fruition. In 1996, the Sherlock Holmes Society in London began planning a statue of Holmes. In 1998, sculptor John Daboudy was hired to design a statue of Holmes and the project was also funded by Abbey National Bank. The Sherlock Holmes London statue was unveiled on September 23, 1999, and the Holmes Society held a week-long celebration.
